League Two Betting Review - 7 August 2006

Author: David Walker
Darlington are top of League Two following a 4-0 drubbing of Macclesfield Town. Former Bolton Wanderers striker Gaetano Giallanza needed just 12 minutes to open his account while former hero Barry Conlon marked his return to the club with a hat-trick after 32, 41 and 73 minutes to wrap up a convincing win for the 3/4 Quakers.

Peterborough United won their first match with Keith Alexander in charge, beating Bristol Rovers 4-1. Jamie Day struck the first goal after 10 minutes, Richard Butcher scored the second on 32 while new signing Simon Yeo scored a third on 10 minutes before half time. The Gas hit back through Sammy Igoe seven minutes into the second half but Lloyd Opara restored a three goal advantage on 77 for the 11/10 Posh.

Conference champions Accrington Stanley received a dose of reality as they lost 2-0 at Chester City. Drewe Broughton netted the first after15 minutes and Gregg Blundell scored a penalty on 86 for the 6/5 Blues.

However, fellow promoted side Hereford United enjoyed opening day success at Stockport County. Stuart Fleetwood scored for the 2/1 Bulls nine minutes before the break and Tamika Mkandawire added a second on the hour.

Grimsby Town came from behind to beat Boston United. The Pilgrims took the lead through Francis Green on 16 and Julian Joachim nine minutes after the break but a double from Peter Bore on 68 and 79 and Isaiah Rankin after 73 minutes ensured a home win at 9/10.

Martin Allen's tough pre season regime paid off as the MK Dons beat Bury in their first match. Izale McLeod netted a penalty on 59 before Andy Bishop responded in the same manner for the Shaker's on 81. Parity lasted just two minutes as the 4/6 Dons found a winner through the highly rated McLeod.

Swindon Town won the battle of the two relegated sides as they secured a narrow victory at Hartlepool United. Lee Peacock struck the decisive goal after 11 minutes for the 21/10 Robins.

Lee Thorpe struck five minutes into stoppage time to earn an opening day victory for Torquay United at Barnet. A stalemate looked almost certain Paul Warhurst's careless back pass enabled the 21/10 Seagulls to return home with maximum points.

One goal was all that Walsall needed to beat Rochdale. Martin Butler, in his second spell at the club, scored the decisive goal for the 8/5 Saddlers after 48 minutes.

Shrewsbury Town began their final season at Gay Meadow with a 2-2 draw against Mansfield Town. Matt Hamshaw put the visitors in front after 17 minutes but Stuart Drummond drew the Shrews level five minutes later. The home side took the lead thanks to a Dave Edwards goal after 31 minutes but the Stags sealed a 23/10 draw when Simon Brown equalised on 43.

A new look Notts County held Lincoln City to a 1-1 draw at Sincil Bank. Adie Moses put the Imps in front after 10 minutes, but the Magpies snatched a 12/5 draw when Jeff Hughes scored an own goal after 55 minutes.

Wrexham grabbed a point at Wycombe Wanderers courtesy of a Mark Jones wonder goal. Tommy Mooney gave the Chairboys a sixth minute lead but Jones pleased the 9/4 draw backers on 32.
