Why It Is Crucial To Have Specialized Cycling Shoes

Author: Gregg Hall

I can remember when there was only a choice of maybe three or four different styles of tennis shoes now there are entire department stores filled nothing but tennis shoes in hundreds of different styles. With the popularity of cycling ever increasing there is now a plethora of specialty athletic shoes for cycling as well.

For those who are not avid cyclists and just use a bicycle for some leisurely recreation or just as a means to get from point A to point B, some decent tennis or running shoes can be a good choice for cycling shoes. Just about any athletic shoes that can give you a decent grip of the pedal can also be given double duty as cycling shoes. Just try to stay away from shoes that are not able to grip the pedal or those that have soles that are so worn down that they won't grip the pedal.

Many people don't think of the choice of shoes as that crucial but the reason it is so important is if your cycling shoes can not grip the pedal your leg can slip off of the pedal and cause an accident. One of the most essential factors in choosing cycling shoes is to make certain they have a stiff sole. A stiff sole will give more power transfer than a soft soled shoe.

For the avid cyclist or competition cyclist there is a diverse selection of many different types of cycling footwear on the market today. Many of these types of cycling shoes also have a clip that attaches onto the pedal of the bike to ensure that your foot doesn't slip off of the pedal. These types of clip-on cycling shoes are the best for serious road cycling as they give the best power transfer and the most efficient ride.

For those who are into mountain biking having shoes that clip to the pedals could literally be life threatening. When biking on big hills and mountains it is necessary to be able to get on and off of the bike easily and quickly. Since the chance of falling is much greater due to the rough and uneven terrain one needs to be able to jump on and off the bike as needed. You also want shoes that can double as hiking boots in case you have to do some hiking while on your mountain biking excursion. This is why many mountain bikers just go for a good quality pair of hiking shoes or boots.

Just like almost any type of footwear, the shoes that you use for cycling are also going to offer options for closures. Many cyclists really prefer laces, while most professional cyclists feel much more comfortable with Velcro. The only factor that you really need to keep in the forefront of your mind is how quick and easy is it for you to get the cycling shoes you buy on and off your feet.

Any kind of exercise is important for everyone and making sure that you have the right equipment can often be the main difference between having a great work-out or getting injured.
